This Virginia county is located just outside of Washington, D.C. American Forests is helping the county develop its Urban Forest Plan, including programs and policies for planting and caring for trees in the neighborhoods that need them most.

The Arizona Sustainability Alliance is committed to protecting the environment and promoting sustainable living through action and advocacy. The Alliance co-leads the Phoenix Region Urban Forestry Roundtable with American Forests. Through the Roundtable, we are developing a Citizen Forester program and an engagement program for residents of homeowners associations.

This United States-based company provides conservation planning, ecological restoration and regenerative design services. American Forests is working with Biohabitats to create a natural resources master plan for Arlington County, Va.

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) and American Forests work together to restore forests in California after high severity wildfires. We also partner on the creation of forest carbon models and a state-wide reforestation strategy for California, which will identify the policy and funding needs for restoring forests unlikely to regenerate after wildfire.

The Chicago Region Trees Initiative is a partnership for coordinated action on key issues facing trees. We are helping the organization with tree planting events in the Chicago area and working together to shape and advocate for forest-related federal policies. We also partner on the Trees for Community Recovery campaign.

American Forests works with Seattle-based nonprofit City Forest Credits to implement a finance mechanism focused on reforesting cities by issuing third-party verified carbon+ credits derived from tree planting and preservation projects in urban areas. Companies or others can buy credits from high-value planting projects in cities that are certified to ensure alignment with corporate social and environmental responsibility goals. American Forests has collaborated with City Forest Credits through the support of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation to develop the mechanism’s protocols, launch the registry and bring City Forest Credits to scale.

American Forests is part of the team developing the City of Boston’s Urban Forest Plan. We are designing an urban forestry workforce training program that will recruit, train and retain local Bostonians to grow and care for their urban forests.

The City of Detroit has supported the Detroit Reforestation Initiative since its inception 5 years ago. Tree Equity will contribute to Detroit’s revitalization by creating jobs, stabilizing neighborhoods and improving recreational and public health outcomes for city residents.

The City of Phoenix co-leads the Phoenix Region Urban Forestry Roundtable with American Forests and is the first city in the United States to adopt a Tree Equity Pledge. The Phoenix City Council recently increased its urban forestry budget by $1.6 million to support its commitment to Tree Equity.

EarthDefine uses AI to scale high-resolution mapping of America’s ground cover, including trees. In 2020, EarthDefine deployed its AI to create the U.S. Tree Map, the most detailed map of all trees in the lower 48 states, updated annually to provide a “live” map of the nation’s forests. EarthDefine provided tree canopy data to American Forests for all urbanized areas nationwide. This data was critical for the calculation of Tree Equity Scores for communities coast to coast. A neighborhood’s Tree Equity Score is based on several factors, including tree cover, ethnicity, population density, employment and average surface temperatures. Urban areas can use the scores to prioritize where to plant trees, so that everyone experiences the benefits of trees, regardless of location, income or race.

The Essex Region Conservation Authority was created in 1973 to further the conservation, restoration, development and management of natural resources (other than gas, oil, coal and minerals) in nine jurisdictions located in southern Ontario, Canada. American Forests is currently supporting the authority’s project to plant 125,000 trees.

The Florida Forest Service protects and manages Florida’s forests. American Forests is working with the agency to restore longleaf pine forests, in part to protect wildlife habitat and boost the forests’ resilience to climate change.

Friends of the Wildlife Corridor works to protect natural resources in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas. It does so by supporting the goals and activities of two wildlife refuges in the Valley. American Forests supports the organization’s work to restore thornscrub habitat in the South Texas National Wildlife Refuge.

American Forests and Girl Scouts of the USA are working together to plant 5 million trees across the United States by 2026. American Forests provides guidance and educational resources around what types of trees to plant in certain environments, where to buy and plant them and how to take care of them.

The Greater Baltimore Wilderness Coalition leads the Planting the Future coalition in the greater Baltimore region in which American Forests actively participates. The coalition’s goal is to triple the rate of tree planting over a 3-year period and to support a proportional increase in workforce development to support these efforts.

Headwaters Alliance works on a variety of environmental projects in Colorado. American Forests supports the organization’s work to plant trees in the state’s Willow Creek watershed.

The Holden Arboretum is located just outside of Cleveland. American Forests is supporting a health expert based at the arboretum who is breeding and testing trees that are resistant to a variety of diseases and insects which threaten trees, such as emerald ash borer.

The International Society of Arboriculture promotes the professional practice of arboriculture. American Forests is partnering with the organization to grow a more sustainable and inclusive tree-care workforce through our Career Pathways Initiative.

This government entity owns and manages 10 state forests in Kentucky. American Forests is helping the agency restore white oak forests.

American Forests is working with La Cruz Habitat Protection Project through a program called Forests for Monarchs with the goal of planting 125,000 trees in Michoacán, Mexico, that will grow to create rest stops for migrating monarchs and habitat for native wildlife.

American Forests is working with the Mauna Kea Watershed Alliance to restore 25 acres of degraded pastureland for endangered native songbirds in the upper elevations of the Mauna Kea landscape on Hawaii Island. The work involves planting 7,500 koa and understory plants, and sustaining nursery production of endangered plant species.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of Michigan’s natural and cultural resources. Together, American Forests and the Michigan DNR have planted millions of jack pine trees on state lands to create habitat for recently de-listed Kirtland’s warbler.

Million Trees Miami is an initiative of Miami-Dade County that is geared toward creating an urban forest in the county. American Forests is helping the initiative’s leaders create Tree Equity.

American Forests works with the Mojave Desert Resource Conservation District, landowners, and California’s fire protection agency (CALFIRE) to create and implement climate-informed reforestation plans in the San Bernardino Mountains. The work focuses on land affected by bark beetle outbreaks and wildfires.

American Forests is working with the National Park Service to restore native forests across the United States, including white oak at the Lincoln Boyhood National Monument, black oak in Yosemite National Park and limber pine in Rocky Mountain National Park.

The North Carolina Forest Service protects more than 18.8 million acres of forestland in North Carolina from the threat of insects, disease and wildfires. American Forests works with the North Carolina Forest Service to reforest state and private lands to sequester carbon and build capacity at state-run nurseries.

American Forests partners with the Northern Institute of Applied Climate Science on a variety of science-based research projects, such as one related to carbon stored in forest soils that started in Maryland and is now expanding to six other states. Together, we also created a detailed guide on how to design strategies that fully harness the potential of urban forests to slow climate change and improve human health.

American Forests has a long-term partnership with the Oregon Department of Forestry to respond to a new era of climate-driven megafires. Currently, the main focus of this partnership is reforesting Santiam State Forest, which was devastated by the 194,000-acre Beachie Creek Fire in 2020.

Our City Forest is the leading nonprofit organization in California’s Silicon Valley for urban forestry and environmental education. American Forests is working with the organization to create an urban forestry tree corps as part of the TAZO Tree Corps initiative.

In 2019, Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and American Forests hired a shared full-time fellow for the Doris Duke Foundation-funded Urban Forests Climate and Health Initiative. Since then, the position has supported American Forests’ efforts in the state. Those efforts include developing a suite of tools such as Tree Equity Score Analyzer to support urban forestry actions that promote public health and slow climate change.

In 2020, American Forests released the first Tree Equity Score Analyzer (TESA) tool for Rhode Island. The Rhode Island Department of Health provided the local health data used in the tool and contributed $10,000 to the first Tree Equity Score grant awarded by American Forests to the Pawtucket and Central Falls Health Equity Zone. The health data layer allows those who use the tool to target tree planting efforts in neighborhoods where the population is experiencing poorer health outcomes compared to others throughout the state. Doing so will help the state achieve its goal of reducing health disparities.

Planting and caring for trees requires investment. Tasked with financing investments in the state’s infrastructure, the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank (RIIB) is partnering with American Forests to explore innovative financing models to fund urban forestry projects. American Forests partnered with RIIB to develop the “Rhode Island Tree Equity Funding, Financing and Policy Guide,” which helps communities identify the various funding and policy mechanisms available to support their urban forestry programs. The myriad of climate and health benefits of trees provide an opportunity to monetize them, generating funds for their ongoing care. Together, RIIB and American Forests are committed to exploring innovative ways to develop sustainable revenue streams for urban tree plantings that could benefit other states.

Speak for the Trees preserves and plants trees throughout Boston. American Forests helped get this nonprofit started and is now partnering with Speak for the Trees to engage residents in identifying planting sites. The tree locations will be prioritized based on analysis from the Tree Equity Score Analyzer that we are developing for the city of Boston.

As one of the nation’s largest employee-owned businesses, The Davey Tree Expert Company delivers tree-care services to cities throughout North America. American Forests is partnering with Davey Tree to model and promote a diverse and inclusive urban forestry workforce by expanding professional training and career opportunities for underrepresented groups. Through our Career Pathways program, American Forests is committed to creating a robust workforce to meet the growing demand to plant and care for trees in cities. We are collaborating with Davey Tree to help them hire and retain workers who identify as Black, Indigenous and/or People of Color. Our partnership supports Davey Tree in achieving their company-wide diversity, equity and inclusion training for hiring managers, helping to create a more representative urban forestry field.

The Greening of Detroit serves and empowers Detroit neighborhoods to create healthy green landscapes through its green infrastructure and job training programs. American Forests and The Greening are founding members of the Detroit Reforestation Initiative, which advocates and supports Tree Equity on a citywide scale.

This global nonprofit organization works to conserve land and water resources. American Forests works with The Nature Conservancy (TNC) on a variety of research projects and tools related to forests in cities and the wilderness, such as the Reforestation Hub. For example, in the Central Puget Sound of Washington, we are working with TNC to develop resources and methodologies to support municipal urban forestry management.

The Trust for Public Land creates parks and protects land for people. Via the Trees for Community Recovery campaign, American Forests is working with this nonprofit to galvanize support for the protection and expansion of urban and community forests in the United States.

The Tree Care Industry Association is supporting our Career Pathways Initiative by informing the development of our pre-apprenticeship curriculum, as well as collaborating on strategies to inclusively fill the pressing labor shortage in urban forestry.

Tree Pittsburgh focuses on restoring and protecting the forests of Pittsburgh, Pa., through tree planting and care, education, advocacy and land conservation. American Forests supports the group’s work to create Tree Equity in the city by planting trees and finding urban forestry job opportunities for people facing barriers to employment.

Tree Trust is focused on planting trees and creating tree-related career opportunities in the Twin Cities area of Minnesota. American Forests is supporting the organization’s work to create Tree Equity in Minneapolis by planting trees and finding urban forestry job opportunities for city residents facing barriers to employment.

American Forests has an enduring partnership with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, working with the agency in many iconic landscapes to protect and restore forests. Together, we have planted 3.2 million trees in wildlife refuges around the country. A major aspect of the collaboration is work in Texas’s Rio Grande Valley, where American Forests is working with the agency and other stakeholders to reforest public lands. In Hawaii’s Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, also a U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service refuge, American Forests is working to restore degraded forests and bring back native songbird populations. American Forests has also worked with the agency in various other refuges, including: Bayou Cocodrie National Wildlife Refuge, Bill Williams National Wildlife Refuge, Canaan Valley National Wildlife Refuge, Eastern Neck National Wildlife Refuge, Flint Hills National Wildlife Refuge, Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge, Marais des Cygnes National Wildlife Refuge, Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, Patoka River National Wildlife Refuge, San Luis National Wildlife Refuge, St. Catherine Creek National Wildlife Refuge, St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge, Wapanocca National Wildlife Refuge.

American Forests and the United States Forest Service have been working together for well over a century. We have partnered with the Forest Service to plant millions of trees, to advocate for the creation of national forests in the eastern U.S., to manage funding to fight wildfires, and much more. The Forest Service’s Urban and Community Forestry Program is instrumental to American Forests’ work in and near cities. For example, together we manage Vibrant Cities Lab, the preeminent online resource for urban forestry, and use the agency’s i-Tree tool to calculate Tree Equity scores.

The Urban Drawdown Initiative seeks to accelerate implementation of carbon removal strategies that improve the social, economic and environmental resilience of communities. Through the Trees for Community Recovery campaign, American Forests is working with this nonprofit to galvanize support for the protection and expansion of urban and community forests in the United States.

The White Oak Initiative works to ensure the long-term sustainability of America’s white oak and the economic, social and conservation benefits of white oak forests. American Forests works with this coalition of government agencies, forest managers, businesses and researchers to revitalize white oaks across public and private lands.

The Whitebark Pine Ecosystem Foundation (WPEF) is dedicated to building financial and political momentum behind saving one of the most important high-mountain species in North America. Whitebark pine forests are rapidly vanishing, largely due to an introduced disease called blister rust fungus. American Forests is working closely with WPEF, the United States Forest Service, other federal agencies and tribal governments to develop a national restoration plan for whitebark pine and to build support to have this tree listed under the Endangered Species Act.
